Mr. Harvey is a dedicated and strict English teacher. He always gives author and her class mate hard time by asking them to speak in English which most of them were unable to do. He wants his student to speak Standard English instead of Pidgin English which the students were accustomed to. Most of his students’ English was not standard because English used to be their second language and as English being second language to me too, I can tell that it was difficult to learn.
Mr. Harvey’s regular speech in which he says “No one will want to give you a job. You sound uneducated. You will be looked upon…….you will only be hurting yourselves,” (10) was very motivating. For me this is the paragraph where I decide the character of Mr. Harvey. Students are as it is difficult to handle and more difficult when they are not willing to learn something. Meanwhile, most of the students become uninterested towards things that are tough to learn. Therefore, Mr. Harvey uses a tough love for his students by being strict and ridiculing the students. However his intention was good, he just want his student to become little more dedicated to education so that they can have a bright future.
Sometime he gets really mean like the time he tells “Cut the crap. Stop playing these goddamn plantation games.”(13) Here I think he is being little stereotypic by judging the students by their parents occupations in the past. However the bottom line is Mr. Harvery is a good person who does care about his student’s future. Deep down inside author agree with the speech Mr. Harvey use to give every time about how education is important in our lives. At last we can say that it must have been the words of Mr. Harvey that made author to focus on her English so finally she was able to become writer.
Hi Sujan,
ReplyDeleteYour point about the children's motivation is insightful. Depending on their responses to Mr. Harvey, he will either serve to motivate or discourage them. In Lovey's case, she seems motivated to learn, but that motivation comes at the expense of her self-esteem. Jerry, on the other hand, seems angry with Mr. Harvey and will probably resist everything Mr. Harvey tries to teach him.
I think you're right that Mr. Harvey stereotypes the children based on the plantation system. We'll read more about this system in All I Asking For Is My Body.
Thanks for your ideas.
Take care,
Lauren
I agree with you that Mr. Harvey just wanted the best for his students. I do not know if he went about it the right way though. Yes, some students may take his tough love and be motivated by it, but I think the majority of the students would not. Most of them would be like Jerry and would be angered and hurt by his teaching method. I know I would. I do not think that I would resist a teacher like Mr. Harvey, but I would surely loathe going to his class and would probably not learn nearly as much because I would be to focused on receiving negative comments and feedback from the teacher.
ReplyDeleteI understand that you might think that Mr. Harvey wants the best for his students but he is doing it all wroung. You cannot be motivated by someone who insults you and says racist things.
ReplyDeleteI feel that yes he tries to aid the children by engaging them but when you her Lovely talk about how stupid she is and how she is going to another class because she isn't smart enough is coming from somewhere.
And isn't it still amazing on how Lovely still offers him a place to live because she cares for him.
