Paragraphs in essay should always support the essay’s main point, except special purpose paragraph which is introductions and conclusions. There are five major steps to build effective paragraphs.
1) Focus on main point: A paragraph of an essay should focus around the main point. For that we can start the main point of the paragraph with topic sentence which will direct the readers and tells what to expect and its support to thesis. Usually topic sentence comes first in the paragraph. We should also stick to the point; all the other unnecessary details should be omitted.
2) Develop the main point: The main point for the paragraph should emphasize what we want to explain in the paragraph and for which enough evidence should be present.
3) Choose a suitable pattern of organization: We should choose the pattern of the essay and develop according to it. There is no rule on patter, we just have to follow a particular pattern which may be examples and illustration, narration, description, process, comparison and contras, analogy, cause and effect, classification and division, and definition.
4) Making paragraph coherent: Sentence and paragraph should flow smoothly form one to another for which old and new information could be handy. To strengthen the sentences we can link ideas clearly, repeat key words, use parallel structure, maintain consistency and provide transitions.
5) If necessary, adjust paragraph length: Paragraph should neither be too long or too short. Mostly people prefer reading paragraphs ranging from one hundred to two hundred words. The size of paragraph varies with the difference in writing like in newspaper it is short, in scholarly writing it is long.
I have learnt a lot about developing a paragraph from this chapter. So from now onward before writing essay I will first focus on the pattern of the essay first which will be the backbone and help me focus on other matters relating to essay. Then I will focus on the main point of the essay and develop the main point for the paragraph using old and new information found on the topic. Finally, I will make sure that the paragraph contain only the required details and make it between one hundred and two hundred words.
